Hero or Zero?

Heroism is an abstract of bravery, however, it just doesn't end there. The notion expands to a sedate urge to be altruistic at any cost and exhibit variance in the process. If valiance was the sole trait to be a hero then each element of the faction that hails Burhan Wani as a magnanimous hero is pertinent in principle. However, heroism is rather subject to intent. The one with a tenacious urge to serve people and the nation is a hero. Heroism trespasses the ambits of gender and much more. Hence Neerja Bhanot will always be a hero in every notion that recognises her. What's questionable here is rather the "martyred hero" tag that Burhan Wani's corpse lies with.

How can someone dwelling on a misguided hatred for the nation be a hero? Is everyone who picks up a gun and grenade and talks about independence a hero?

If we restrict this to Kashmir then the answer is surely yes unless their hero wears the Indian Army sleeve.

Kashmir as we all know is a peculiar state. The lines drawn during the hurtful separation couldn't solve the problem. A virtual Pakistan still thrives with valour in Kashmir. When Indians mention Kashmir , we talk about our part of it since there's a Kashmir in Pakistan too known as the Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan and There's one in China too known as the Aksai Chin.

Who was Burhan Wani isn't the question! What one draws out from his ceased existence is the question rather and here comes the paradox.

Burhan Muzzafar Wani the commander of Hizbul Mujaheddin was the poster boy of militancy for the Indian army. Contrary to this he was the icon of a baffled freedom struggle of a radicalised Kashmir. This radicalisation instigates when people in Kashmir are made to believe that India does not portray any sense of belongingness to them. They are persuaded to believe that they're are bedevilled by the Indian army. With AFSPA hanging persistently and the exploitation of it by the army in instances the radicalising elements get facilitated. To each of this radicalised and brain washed resident of Kashmir Burhan is a martyr, Burhan is a hero. The Twenty One year old terror outfit who brutally killed a plethora of people has a paramount fan following. To people in Kashmir the Indian Army is a metaphor of the evil and Burhan an inspiration. When army shot him down on 8th July the valley mourned his fall as if a freedom fighter  had kissed death. What followed the encounter was a debacle of peace and order in the valley. The image of being a "heaven on earth" was stone pelted to being that of a nightmare. The valley stayed shut for over three months. About ninety people lost their lives in the scuffle, thousands of civilians and security personnel got injured. The separatists foot prints  of Burhan turned out to be even more treacherous than Burhan himself. The valley stood against the entire nation to censure Burhan's death, a militant's death.

This brought out a reality check that in Kashmir separatism and radicalisation stand much higher than patriotism. Burhan recieved what he had sowed and the bullets that rip him apart were much deserved and were a narrative of a zero tolerance to terror of any form.

Burhan Wani even after his well earned demise has many fans on the social media and an overwhelming support. His father argues that he turned out to be a militant due to atrocities inflicted by the Indian Army and he finds a large consensus on this. Whatever  made a militant out of Burhan would never be palatable and justified. Such miss guided fringe elements are meant to be sent to coventry. He like any other coward terrorist deserved to die. His pseudo heroism is vague and insensible. AFSPA inflicted in Kashmir in 1990 may has its demerits but Burhan or any other of similar Burhan Wani even after his well earned demise has many fans on the social media and an overwhelming support. If someone has what it takes to pull the tag of being a hero then its our security forces that have held the sovereignty of the nation under all circumstances and their valiance has an intent to serve the nation above anything else. It's time people in Kashmir revise their definitions of heroism. Burhan's death was rather a victory for anyone who confers faith and love on the nation.
